As someone who lists Jeff Buckley’s Grace as his all-time favorite record, I’m hooked anytime I hear music that recalls the warmth that album inspires. Belgian Blues on Big Scary‘s recent release, Not Art, is one such track. The song gives me chills. Then again, the whole album is that way. It’s rare to hear a recording where, from start to finish, you feel you’ve been invited into a cocooned world. Not Art is one of those records that sucks you in and confines you, churning up buried feelings and setting a mood that sustains.
The Australian band’s tour in support of the album, released in the U.S. through Barsuk, took them to Radio Radio Wednesday night. Those on hand were witness to an impassioned live show. The band leaned heavily on Not Art while also playing tracks like Gladiator from 2011′s Vacation. Lead singer Tom Iansek, alternating between keyboard and guitar, has the kind of gifted voice that can rise from the whispered deep and soar. But he sings with restraint, which made those high moments that much more enchanting. Jo Syme added backing vocals while hammering the drums; together they were a potent, mesmerizing combo.
Big Scary has received several accolades in their home country, including winning the Triple J Australian Album of the Year award. Catch them now while they’re building their audience in the U.S. — you may not have the chance to see them in intimate club settings for much longer.
