2013 was another great year of concerts in Indianapolis. Last year I hit an all-time high in shows attended, a number I knew would be difficult to meet again. But I still managed to make it out to 51 shows in 2013, and the site added coverage of a bunch more through valuable contributors. As always, I can’t hit everything, but these were the 10 (listed alphabetically) that stood out.

Ash at Radio Radio 3/22/2013 — After almost two decades, I finally caught Ash again — and they delivered. Tim Wheeler led the three-piece in a tight, boisterous set that hit almost all the highlights. Big thanks to MOKB Presents for bringing this one in.

Christopher Paul Stelling at Darrin’s Coffee Company 7/22/2013 — Yes, this was an Indy Rock Live Present’s show, but CP Stelling was mesmerizing. I still get chills thinking about his story and performance of The Ocean Stole My Love Away. And Ryan Brewer was the perfect opener. Intimate songs in a great environment.

Johnny Marr at The Vogue 11/11/2013 — The legendary guitarist delivered 90 minutes of tight rock perfection featuring a mix of new and (Smiths) old. He completely blew away my expectations.

Josh Ritter at The Vogue 4/18/2013 — I wasn’t as in love with the newest record as some, but that didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of Ritter‘s performance in the spring. He’s a terrific performer and his joy of being on stage was contagious.

Ken Stringfellow at the Do317 Lounge 2/11/2013 — Another Indy Rock Live Present’s show and my personal highlight of the year. Ken’s performance was warm, generous, and above all, intimate. The quiet Lounge environment enabled him to connect wonderfully with the audience. When Ken wasn’t behind his keyboard, he was walking around the room, guitar in hand, singing to the hushed crowd. And his duet with Laura K. Balke was jaw-dropping.

The Kickback at White Rabbit Cabaret 9/26/2013 — I’d seen Chicago’s the Kickback a few times before September’s show, but this was the one that made me giddy. I want these guys to blow up. They’re fantastic.

Old 97s w/ The Travoltas at The Vogue 2/16/2013The 97s always put on a great show, but this was the Too Far to Care in-its-entirety concert, and it was a crusher. The Travoltas, led by Salim Nourallah, were a giddy opener.

The National w/ Daughter 8/4/2013 — My fourth time seeing the National, and my favorite, by far. The show at ONC firmly solidified their place as one of the best bands on the planet. Opening act Daughter was the ideal lead-in.

Sigur Ros at White River State Park 9/17/2013 — I’d been waiting years to see Iceland’s Sigur Ros, and they did not disappoint. On a beautiful night under the stars, the music swelled and soared.

Sons of Fathers at the Do317 Lounge 8/29/2013 — The best blind luck show of the year. I knew little about Austin, Texas band Sons of Fathers before their August show. I left feeling like I’d just heard one of the best groups currently on the road. SoF put on the type of show that makes you remember how much you love live music.

What were your favorite shows of the year?
